Joby Gorillapods
Monkey Around

by KEN BROWNE

While walking through one of the recent trade shows something caught my eye - a new set of tripods called Gorillapods.
Gorillapods are amazing bendable legs that can be made to grip just about any shape.

MANUFACTURER JOBY HAS DEVELOPED a unique set of flexible tripods for many of camera and accessories. Gorillapods are amazing bendable legs that can be made to grip just about any shape. You can wrap them around objects in most any position for support or pose in various angles. They come in three different versions. First there is the Original Gorillapod for point and shoot or compact digital cameras. Then there is the SLR model which is great for your SLR bodies and supports a body and lens well. Each model has round rubber shoes at the bottom of its three legs and a rubber ring around each joint. The small and medium versions, Original and SLR, include a slim quick-release plate that slides into a locking head. The plate is so slim that leaving it attached to the camera is easier than repeatedly taking if off and putting it on. The newest addition is the SLR Zoom which supports heavier cameras and camcorders, up to 6.6 pounds. Unlike the standard SLR model it does not have the quick-release plate, but you can attach a tripod head to the SLR Zoom which allows for more versatility. The base screws directly into your camera or tripod mounting ring on large zoom lenses. It won't replace your current tripod, but great to use in a tight spot.
