Canon 40D
Hardy Perennial

by Ken Browne

The Canon 40D is the 6th DSLR aimed at the pro-interest market since the series introduction in 2000. And it has enjoyed a positive trade response.
A welcome addition to the Canon DSLR family

THE 40D doesn’t look much different but there are some subtleties of interest. The Mega Pixel has increased to 10.1 in this model. Dust reduction is now accomplished with an ultrasonic platform which shakes the low pass filter.

Another change is the increase of fps to 6.5 fps. The 40D can shoot up to 17 RAW or 75 high quality JPEGs. The LCD screen has been increased to 3 inches and offers Live View, the only drawback to this the mirror is always up, making Auto Focus and Metering not fully functional. However, Live View is very useful when using a tripod or in a studio with product shots.

There is cross point AF with the faster lens. This body also includes the new Digic III processor, also found in the new EOS-1D Mark III.

The EOS 40D ticks all the boxes: solid, clear viewfinder, good ergonomics, clear and easy to learn interface, accurate and detailed images with low noise (even at high sensitivities). Medium priced and a welcome addition to the Canon DSLR family.
