Hasselblad Flextight X1 and X5
High End Scanning

by CLAIR JANCHOTE

Although not a new product, very few manufacturers invest in quality film scanner technology these days so these are worth a look.
'X1 now features softer illumination, making grain and scratches less obvious'

On the outside these scanners have a more elegant aesthetic than their predecessors but on the inside they are mostly similar to the earlier versions 646 and 949. A fact that many photographers consider to be an advantage.

Compared to the previous 949 model the smaller X1 now features softer illumination, making grain and scratches less obvious. The high-end X5 is significantly faster and also offers hardware based dust and scratch elimination.

The X1 and X5 are closely related, both are PC / Mac compatible, Firewire-connected units with 3 x 8000 pixel CCD sensors and a Rodenstock lens.

The X1, the cheaper of the two, has the ability to scan positive/negative film at 6300 dpi optical resolution, and a 60MB/minute scan speed. While the X5 boasts A4 reflective scanning, a batch/slide feeder, active cooling to minimize noise, 8000 dpi optical resolution and an impressive 300MB/minute scan speed.
