Olympus/Panasonic Micro 4/3 System
Joint Concept

by JULIA SONK

It’s nice to see two companies coming together to develop a new system to make the photographer’s life easier rather than hide each other’s findings and endlessly compete.
'A positive move towards lighter and smaller digital camera systems.'

Olympus and Panasonic have recently released their joint concept of a Micro Four Thirds System into the ether. They promise to improve the current Four Thirds System interchangeable lens digital camera standard which has been used by several manufacturers since 2002.

The Micro Four Thirds System will have about 50% shorter flangeback distance which makes the lens mount 6mm smaller, and the electrical contacts in mount will go up to 11 (from 9). It’s a positive move towards lighter and smaller digital camera systems.

Interestingly, not as many people require the flexibility of interchangeable lens compared to the way it was in the past with 35mm cameras, but it’s still a growing market, worth investing in, as it seems.

Don’t throw away your current Four Thirds lens quite yet – all you need is an adaptor to use them on the new Micro Four Thirds camera system.
