Graphis Nudes 4

by Andrew Kaiser

When it comes to the world of nude photography, there are very few publications that set the standards of what is cutting edge, and what is simply an old cup of tea. A publisher of all things dealing with the visual arts, Graphis is attempting to change all that with its influential annual simply titled Graphis Nudes.

Graphis Nudes 4

B. Martin Pedersen
Hardcover
Graphis Press
ISBN: 193124149X

For the fourth year, the body’s infinite possibilities are presented in one exceptional volume in the form of a large-format annual that is meant as a showcase for the world’s top image makers in the field of the nude. More than fifty emerging and established photographers from all corners of the globe are represented by all-new nudes in both black and white and color.

Often times, large volumes such as this presenting a wide array of photographers can be hit or miss in nature. After all, no two people have the same taste, especially when it comes to art, and presenting so many photographers between the covers of one book would make appealing to everyone 100% of the time next to impossible.

Still, as with years past, Graphis Nudes 4 manages to elevate the subject of the nude to new heights by presenting fresh and innovating work that is, dare I say it, completely original. Not all the work will be to every photography enthusiasts’ taste, but at the very least it will be engaging and thought provoking. That is after all what artistic nudes are supposed to be about.

Some of this success is no doubt thanks to Graphis’ notoriously difficult and rigorous submission and selection process. With literally thousands upon thousands of image submissions sent in under very strict guidelines, getting ones work published in a Graphis annual, whether that annual be nudes, advertising, general photography, or modern art; makes magazines like Aperture seem like a cakewalk.

Of course, it is precisely this strict adherence to quality that gains Graphis Nudes the prestigious reputation it so rightly deserves.

The bottom line is this; if you are interested in seeing a condensed look at where the world of nude photography stands today, Graphis Nudes 4 should be high on your shopping list.
