FAMOUS FOR a long association with the great Alfred Stieglitz, who became her husband in 1924. Throughout her life, the world’s greatest and most acclaimed photographers took her picture, including Ansel Adams, Karsh, Arnold Newman, Irving Penn and Andy Warhol - amongst numerous others. All of which made her serious demeanour instantly recognisable to the public.

New Mexico, where she lived from 1949 almost until her death in 1986, provided the ideal backdrop to her own minimalist life style - although in her last decade she surprised the art world by travelling extensively with her assistant and friend, the younger artist, Juan Hamilton.
