WITH THE CURRENT excess of art festivals and fairs, the competition is huge and any new event must offer something special to grab the oversaturated audience. The 2008 New York Photo Festival does it by commissioning well-known figures in photography to curate its main pavilions. Martin Parr (British photographer), Kathy Ryan (picture editor of The New York Times Magazine), Lesley A. Martin (book publisher at the Aperture Foundation) and Tim Barber (photographer, curator and former photo editor for Vice magazine) were chosen ‘for their decisive and innovative approaches to curating, editing, sequencing, and showcasing the varied work of the medium in ways that continually surprise and inspire’.
The New York Photo Festival Awards (announced during the Festival - on 16 May) is set to recognise new photography talents in several categories, such as Editorial, Photography Book, Personal Work and Advertising.
