THE SHOWCASE includes 45 crucial pieces made since 1971, some of them lent from private collections as well as some being made especially for the exhibition.
Archival material on display – sketches, announcements, books, photographs etc. – offers additional insight into the work of this famous artist duo which met at St Martin’s School of Art in London in 1967.
Gilbert & George have been pushing boundaries of art in a political and puritan sense, long before YBA. Under their slogan ‘Art for All’, they create art based on images that are instantly comprehensible (similar to traditional religious artworks), yet full of meaning.
