PICTURE PARADISE presents photographic images from places like India, Sri Lanka, Southeast and East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, and the west coast of North America. Many of these came from the National Gallery’s own vast collection. This is the case, for example, of an 8.5m long panorama of Sydney harbour by Bernard Holtermann.
In this, so far most extensive, overview of Asian photography, over 400 works have been selected and organised into several thematic and chronological groups: Pioneers: 1840s–60s, The Art of Photography: 1880s-1910s, Views and Portraits: 1860s-80s, Modern Times: 1920s-40s, The Art of Photography: Japan and The Art of Photography: Ethnographic.
